STEP INTO THE DOUGHNUT
Before the screening, at 17.30 participants are invited to take part in an optional interactive activity, Step into the Doughnut. This engaging session introduces the concept of Doughnut Economics and encourages participants to reflect on what it means to live within a “safe and just space” for humanity, where everyone’s needs can be met without exceeding planetary boundaries. Whether you are new to Doughnut Economics or already familiar with the concept, this activity provides a fun and accessible way to explore sustainable futures together.

GFI CO-ORDINATOR OF THIS EVENT
Director of Green Foundation Ireland, BRIAN GORMLEY is the Head of Sustainability Education in TU Dublin, where he and his team work to advance sustainability in the University, through capacity building, staff development, and education. TU Dublin’s strategic plan sets out that all academic programmes will have sustainability as a learning outcome, and the University was recently recognised as a Centre for Sustainability across the Curriculum – the first such centre in Europe.
Brian’s involvement in environmentalism started when he set up the DCU Green Society in 1987, and he was subsequently elected Students Union President. Since then Brian has been actively involved in sustainability and green campus activities in higher education. He is a founder member and Treasurer of Connecting Cabra, an award-winning community group that focuses on community development through sustainability. Brian is a keen (but not very good) birdwatcher.
As always at our events,
an important part will be the
Q&A session
which will allow full
participation by those attending.

ABOUT THE FILM
The Cost of Growth follows climate activists Anuna De Wever and Lena Hartog as they travel through Italy, Serbia, and Sápmi, documenting grassroots resistance to extractivism. The film connects these local struggles with broader debates on war, justice, and democracy – showing how extractive violence is a form of structural warfare on communities and ecosystems.
Through intimate encounters with grassroots movements, the film weaves together voices from affected communities and leading thinkers — such as Fati N’Zi-Hassane, Vijay Prashad, Greta Thunberg and Jason Hickel – to interrogate who truly pays for growth, how growth is defended and how we move beyond.
This is a 100% non-profit project. Funding raised through screenings is channelled back to campaigns on democratising the economy and to support the communities and movements featured in the film.
